Should you send letters or post cards for your direct marketing campaigns?   The answer to this question depends on your marketing needs.  Sometimes your training can determine the answer.

 First, it is absolutely necessary that your leads are targeted.  The more targeted they are, the more success you will have.  No matter how effective your media is, the results will always depend on how well your leads are targeted.

In my business, I only send letters to probate leads.  The process of probate that people who have inherited property have to go through can take months.  For this reason, I send them a letter every 30 days that is nice, personalized and sympathetic.   After 6 months I do not contact them any more.

 I use a red hand-written font to address the envelop.

 All the others get a post card twice in a period of 30 days.  My post cards are always glossy and have screaming colors and they have a real stamp.  The mailing label is always a screaming color that contrasts with the rest of the card.

This attracts attention so they will not trash them with the rest of the mail.

I prefer to get stamps and address stickers done locally.   I drop my own mail at the post office!  This way I can time when I get most of my leads.  If my mail goes out on Saturday, most leads come in on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Post cards
The beauty of post cards is that they are easy to manage and they are cheap.  I get 5000 postcards for $200 to $300.  The major cost is just the postage stamp.  The address stickers cost close to nothing.  You can get stamps and address stickers done cheaply too.  Craigslist is a good place to get people to do this work.

Regular letters
 You will spend more money with regular letters, and you must have a reliable printer.  Alternatively, you can have a generic letter printed for you.  Since I have a good printer I prefer to print personalized letter myself.

 I can easily manage this since I never have more than 100 letters at a time.

Odd-letters
I have mailed yellow letters in yellow odd-shaped envelops.  They are quite effective, but they can also be quite expensive.  I therefore gave up on them to keep my costs down.

I have my marketing well optimized that I feel comfortable with the response I get without them.   This is not to say they were not effective – I just have enough leads that I do not find the need to use them.

Call to action
 A call to action tells your prospects what to do next, and is a must for any marketing piece.   You must include your phone number and the web address of your real estate investor website.

 Half the people will go to your website and sign up. These leads will be fully pre-screened and pre-negotiated.  You will end up saving a lot of time, money and effort by not having to repeat the same things over and over, and you spend a few minutes only to tell if it is a deal or not.

The other half will prefer to call – there is nothing you can do about this.

Ultimately, a well optimized direct mail marketing campaign will get more leads and profits  for your  real estate investing business.| Ultimately, as long as you can optimize your direct mail marketing campaigns, your real estate investing business will continue to get more leads and profits.}
